quantity，amount，number，sum
這些名詞均有“總數、總量”之意。
quantity 書面用詞，指事物的總量和總數量，側重大批計量，含準確測量的意味。
amount 普通用詞，與quantity近義，但強調整體，指把所有數量、重量及度量歸并在一起得出的總數。
number 普通用詞，指人或物的數目，強調數的概念。
sum 普通用詞，指簡單加算的結果。
1. quantity表示“數量”時，如果是指相對于質量來說的“數量”，則為不可數名詞。
例句：We've always put quality before quantity.
我們總是認為質量比數量重要。
2. quantity如果指具體的數量，一般為可數名詞，這時可以連用不定冠詞或者用復數形式;如果要表示數量的多少，則可以用 great, large, huge或者small 等形容詞修飾;quantity既可以用于修飾不可數名詞，也可以用于修飾復數名詞。
例句：
He ate a small quantity of rice.
他吃了少量的米飯。
Don't strive merely for quantity of production.
在生產中不要單純地追求數量。
注意事項：在某些特殊表達中，quantity可單獨表示“大量”(沒有large或者great之類的修飾語)的意思。
例句：
Heavy drinking can reduce the quality and quantity of sperm.
大量飲酒會降低精子的質量和數量。
3.當quantity在a great (large, small) quantity of…這個結構作主語時，其謂語的數原則上和其中的名詞的數保持一致。
例句：A large quantity of air-conditioners has been sold since the temperature is high.
因為氣溫很高，有大量空調售出。
注意事項：如果該結構變成quantities of…這樣的形式，當這一結構用作主語時，其謂語動詞一律要用復數。
例句：Quantities of books were on the bed. 在床上有很多很多書。
