Since the foundation of the first university in the world about one century ago, universities have been regarded as the sacred places that convey knowledge and cultivate talents. However, as the function of universities keeps changing and expanding, people expect more from tertiary education. For university students, to participate in various social activities is equally important to acquire knowledge.
Admittedly, academic study ought to be the predominant task of most university students. It is essential for them to guarantee that sufficient time is invested in obtaining knowledge and skills that enable them to survive and succeed in job market or further education. By taking classes and finishing homework, students follow professors’ instruction to explore the field of their major. By collecting documents online and doing experiments in the lab, students further improve their study and research ability. All these are essential for students to achieve satisfied academic performance.
However, excellent academic performance alone is actually not enough to ensure graduates promising career development, and they also need various transferable skills strengthened through social activities to be competitive and competent. The experience of participating in student government, societies, clubs and volunteer jobs help students develop leadership, improve time management, enhance interpersonal skills, learn how to deal with crisis, etc. These skills are also valued by many employers who expect candidates to be able to adapt to the work environment and get along well with colleagues as soon as possible.
In a nutshell, it is not enough for university students to simply focus on academic study. They also need to take part in an array of activities, in order to become more competitive.
Full time university students should take a lot of time to study, but it is also essential to be involved in other activities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
